Sir Tom Jones sought advice from Tinie Tempah for the battles |
0 – Guest judges
Will.i.am picked out Dante Santiago and The Voice season 2 runner up Leah McFall to help streamline his acts. Kylie Minogue drafted in Scissor Sisters’ Jake Shears. Sir Tom Jones showed he is down with the kids by calling up Tinie Tempah to give him a hand. And Ricky Wilson asked Katy B for some insight on his acts.
9 – Fate?
Jermain Jackman revealed he had met Will at a music festival one year ago. He ran up to him and said he wanted to sing. And what did Will suggest? That he audition for The Voice! ‘That’s nuts!’ Will said when Jermain told his story. ‘The person I told to audition. I am the only one who turned for him!’
8 – Little less condescending, a little more singing
Team Kylie boys Lee and Jimmy faced off in the battle round – with Jimmy’s slightly patronising opinions becoming a bit overbearing. And Lee didn’t appreciate him telling him to ‘be himself’. ‘I’m here to get direction from a global superstar, not Jimmy Weston from Coventry!’ Lee grumbled. But he needn’t have worried, as Lee won the battle, sending Jimmy home.
7 – What song?
Sally Barker was baffled by her battle song against Talia Smith. ‘It’s called Dear Darlin’, by someone called Olly Murs?’ she said in a panicked phone call to her kids after finding out what she would be singing. But she aced it, winning her way into the next round.
6 – Flirt round one
Leo Ihenacho and Kylie caused a stir during the blind rounds when they flirted heavily on the stage. The two picked up where they left off when Leo was set with the task of singing Leo Sayer’s Thunder In The Heart. ‘Anyone feeling thunder in the heart?’ Kylie asked. ‘I’m feeling thunder in loads of places!’ Leo replied. ‘Thunder down under?’ Kylie quipped. ‘Yes!’ Leo enthused. These two need to get a room!
5 – Top Class
Bizzi Dixon and Kenny Thompson took talent to a new level with their rendition of Hey Jude. Their soulful voices were so impressive, the coaches were gobsmacked. ‘That was the best battle I’ve seen in three series. They took Jude to church,’ said Will. But it was down to Tom to decide who would stay and who would go. And he chose to keep Bizzi.
4 – Emma.i.am
Has Emma Willis been hanging out too much with Will? She had this to say after ‘geek’ Tom Barnwell faced off against ‘chic’ Callum Crowley from Team Will. ‘It was the geeky boy, versus the cheeky boy. So what does the sneaky boy have to say?’ she asked. Sounds like something Will would say!
3 – Girl fight!
Jessica Steele was rattled when Anna McLuckie pulled out her secret – but obvious – weapon: Her harp. Jessica freaked out and cried thinking Anna would have the instant upper hand. But when Will said ‘When someone throws you lemons, make lemonade,’ she decided to play an instrument too, and got behind the piano. Marvin said; ‘Keys versus strings, pop versus folk, voice versus voice!’ and the girls fought it out in the battle ring, with Anna emerging victorious.
2 – Flirt round two
Christina Marie and Nathan Amzi were tasked with singing The Power of Love – and Ricky demanded that they sing it like they were in love with each other. ‘I wish I had been paired with David Tennant or Leonardo DiCaprio,’ Christina complained. Nathan’s obviously not her type, then. But as ‘in love’ as their performance was, the female half of this duo was in it to win.
1 – Second chances and knock-outs
The coaches have the option to ‘steal’ acts that are knocked out if they think they want them on their own team. With one steal allowed per coach, Tom swooped in and took Stephen after he was rejected by Team Kylie. Will took Nomakhosi after she lost her place with Kylie. And Ricky stole Jessica Steele – before the clock had even begun – after she was ejected from Team Will. But for Sarah Eden, Jimmy Weston, Talia Smith, Tila & Tavelah, Tom Barnwell, Kenny Thompson, Kelsey-Beth, Mairead Conlon and Nathan Amzii – it was the end of the road. Knocked out of their battles and without being ‘stolen’, these acts had to leave the competition for good.
So after the first of the battles, Lee Glasson, Sally Barker, Jermain Jackson, Beth McCarthy, Leo Ihenacho, Stephen Alexander (steal), Bizzi Dixon, Callum Crowley, Jai McConnell, Namakhosi Nkosi (steal) Emily Adams, Celestine, Anna McLuckie, Jessica Steele (steal) and Christina Marie are all marching on to the knockouts. Kylie still has her steal to use. And 24 other contestants are still to perform. Tune in next week for more battles.
