As a welcome relief, that is where BreaKThrough comes in. BreaKThrough is the UAE’s first mixed arts platform that aims to nurture and promote the arts and entertainment scene by bridging the gap between rising and established artists and their respective art forms.</div>

The first installment of the mixed arts show opened to a small, intimate crowd on Friday (March 28) at the Courtyard Playhouse.</div>

Two acts consisting of seven performers performed spoken word, dance and music; and screened original films. The brainchild of Indian national Fabian Martin and Russian national Elena Solina, the first installment was a smashing success among those who attended.</div>

Martin, the lead guitarist and spokesperson of Behold the Locus, who worked alongside Solina to make BreaKThrough a reality, said: “This is something I have been working on for about a year now. It is something all of us are passionate about. Dubai has several big venues for big performers and big artists. But there is nothing for smaller artists, which is not very encouraging for young upcoming artists.”</div>

The acts included Jruzz Merca, a Dubai-based Commercial photographer and videographer; contemporary dance duo Guin and Talin Harbiyan; solo dancer Tara Tibos; poets Daabelle Gutierrez, and Zeina Hashem Beck; filmmaker Faisal Hashmi; and musicians Behold the Locus, and The Younglings.</div>

The crowd outside a movie hall in the heart of South Delhi was a rare exception. </div>

As one jostled to get tickets for “2 States” one wasn't sure what to expect. The word of mouth publicity was great and so was the storyline but then witness the success of atrocious films like “Dabaang” or many other potboilers.<br style="margin: 0px 0px 10px; padding: 0px;" />“2 States” -- that is still playing to full houses, is a rare combination of entertainment and full-blooded emotion. Based on a book, “2 States: The Story of my Marriage” by prolific novelist-screenplay writer Chetan Bhagat, the semi-autobiographical film explores the theme of how the polarisation of cultures between two Indian states can impede a symbiotic relationship between two students of  the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A). Krish (played by Arjun Kapoor) and Ananya (Alia Bhatt) who are madly in love but don't want to get married without their parents' consent.<br style="margin: 0px 0px 10px; padding: 0px;" />That's at one level. “2 States” is also a funny, moving story that has its rough side: the tortuous relationship between Krish and his alcoholic father (TV actor Ronit Roy), the cultural divides between a typically Punjabi and conservative Tamil family and the subsequent havoc played on two young lives.<br style="margin: 0px 0px 10px; padding: 0px;" />Old hat? Not the way Bhagat's story unfolds or the great sensitive handling of the characters by the director. Every frame in “2 States” makes one laugh, cry or hold one's breath for what's to come. Krish is not your average good-looking big city slicker, nor is Ananya the run of mill heroine. Yet the two are great together; funny yet passionate, light and yet heart-rending when parental opposition threatens to keep them apart.<br style="margin: 0px 0px 10px; padding: 0px;" />What makes “2 States” stand apart from other such films is that it follows relationships artistically and sometimes unforgettably. In an interview with IBNLive, Bhagat says of his father, “It was a tumultuous relationship, where there were unmet expectations on both sides. I tried very hard to fix it but beyond a point it was difficult. I had to forgive him to move on in life, and I did so by writing '2 States' where the boy's father plays a positive role in the end. That helped me heal.”</div>

She finally comes up with the idea of temporary partition system that would allow privacy for the couple in the family and ensure children of a normal growing up environment. On the other hand, the unfortunate Kabita, who is unable to concieve, struggles to maintain her family but in vain. However, her love affairs outdo the tension of her family bond. She cannot decide who to choose from Shomudro and Shuborno.<br style="margin: 0px 0px 10px; padding: 0px;" />Unlike the traditional bangla movie, it does not represent the patriarchal society as commanding over the women. Rather it shows how patriarchal commands yields to the fights of a woman through Kabita's success in bringing her husband Shuborno back to her. The cinematography and dialogue are above average. There are two stories in the movie which touches each other but never collides. Therefore, it can't be an Innaritu copy. Rather, there is a lot of French New Wave influence in the movie. Shot in crammed spaces of Hong Kong apartments and buildings, everything looks in-your-face to the audience. Camerawork takes a lot of maneuvering to shoot in tight spaces. Both stories are about love and loneliness in a concrete jungle that is Hong King. Even in the density, people are lonely and always looking for love. I am sure that any guy watching this movie will have a crush on Faye Wong dancing to the music. It's the first of a trilogy. Based on the idea that total conformity will eventually lead to the best kind of divergence within the population—smart, kind, brave, honest and selfless rebels—“Divergent” creates its own dystopian fantasy in a futuristic Chicago. The interplay with the city, including lovely shots of a totally dark skyline, a creepy marshland that surrounds downtown and extras climbing over every spare piece of the L, was very fun to watch. The special effects and electronic soundtrack that take the audience up and over the landscape, including a pretty cool zip-line ride at night, are a testament to what the film does best: showing off cool effects. The rest of the film, being ever true to the book, follows Tris, played by Shailene Woodley, as she bucks against the system that created her. In Tris' world, teens must choose to belong to a faction that will eventually supersede their families: the brave Dauntless, intelligent Erudite, selfless Abnegation, kind Amity and honest Candor. Woodley does a lovely job as Tris, managing to play up her faults as a naive and somewhat abrasive teenage girl who grows to the occasion and follows her spirits. Kate Winslet as the evil Jeanine and Theo James as the love interest, brilliantly named Four, act as much-needed eye candy beside Woodley and offer some acting to get excited about. It is between these three characters that audiences will find Divergent's unexpectedly humorous moments and its necessarily poignant ones. It's a fun film for those who are looking for new female characters to root for, and don't mind a few basic flaws in the story.</div>

Naomi Kawase was born in 1969, at a time when Japanese cinema was thriving with vigorous underground filmmaking, the initial streak in Kawase's own young career. Many of her works have been documentaries, including Embracing, about her search for the father who abandoned her as a child, and Katatsumori, about the grandmother who raised her. While studying photography at the Osaka School of Visual Arts, she started to make films as part of a workshop: “I focus on that which interests me” (1988), a personal symphony of the city, “The concretization of these things flying around me” (1989), a silent study of the homeless, "Presently (1989), a poetic piece visualising the four elements. After graduating from the Osaka School of Photography (then the School of Visual Arts) in 1989, she spent an additional four years as a lecturer.</div>

<br />In 1992, she made Embracing, a medium length 16mm feature in which she sets up to find her biological father (Naomi was brought up by her grandparents after her parents' marriage broke up). In 1993, she cast her documentary eye on a striking boy-meets-girl fiction in White Moon. She dedicated her following film Katatsumori to her grandmother. This film and the next one, See Heaven, won prizes at the Yamagata International Film Festival. International recognition increased powerfully in 1997 with the Camera d'Or at Cannes and the FIPRESCI Prize at Rotterdam for her first fiction feature, Moe no Suzaku, a tragic family history set against the backdrop of economic recession, shot in her hometown, the provincial city of Nara – a region often featured in her films. The Weald, an intimate depiction of old age, was awarded with a special mention at Visions du Réel in 1999. Mangekyo (1999), her latest documentary about her conflicting working relationship with photographer Shinya Arimoto, was screened at Rotterdam and Visions du Réel. Hotaru, shot again in Nara, is her second fiction feature.<br style="margin: 0px 0px 10px; padding: 0px;" />Kawase's work is heavily concerned with the distorted space between fiction and non-fiction that has occurred within the state of modern Japanese society, approaching "fiction with a documentarian's gaze." She employs this documentary-realism to focus on individuals of lesser cultural status, challenging prevailing representations of women within the male-dominated Japanese film industry. This theme is also connected to her own personal reflections on contemporary issues in the current climate of economic depression such as the declining birth-rate, alienation, and the collapse of traditional family structures.
