Women today have twice as many sexual partners in their lifetime as 20 years ago, as attitudes towards sexual behaviour change
Women are becoming more sexually liberated with twice as many partners today as 20 years ago and four times as many having same-sex encounters, a survey shows.
The average woman aged 16-44 today reports having had 7.7 sexual partners of the opposite sex during their lifetime compared with just 3.7 in 1991 and 6.5 in 2014.
While men are still the more promiscuous sex, the results suggest the gap between the genders is becoming smaller as women become more adventurous.
Between 1991 the average man's number of lifetime partners increased from 8.6 to 12.6, but then fell to 11.7 in 2012, figures show.
Overall the average number of times people of either gender have sex has dropped to less than once a week, compared with five times per month in 1991.
